The Submit HPC Job Dialog

In order to submit jobs using the Ansoft Submit HPC Job dialog, the cluster head node hostname must be set. Select Tools > Windows HPC > Select Head Node to open the Select Head Node dialog.

Enter the cluster head node name or use the browse button to search for one. Click OK when finished. Next select Tools > Windows HPC > Submit HPC Job to open the Submit HPC Job : Tasks dialog.

• The Analyze Setups section allows you to select which setups are analyzed:

All setups in the project

All setups in a specified design: Select a design from the pulldown list

Specify setups: Add one or more setups using the Add Setups dialog

If multiple setups are specified, they will be processed sequentially in the order displayed in the edit box.

• Resource Requirements controls how compute resources are used.

• Distributed Analysis controls resource usage for the portion of the analysis that may be distributed to different hosts.

— Number of engines is the number of analysis engines that are started in parallel; the engines may run on separate hosts.

— Number of cores per engine controls the degree of parallel processing within each engine; these parallel threads of execution must be on the same host.

In the case of Designer, each distributed engine represents one domain of a large model, a portion of a frequency sweep analysis, or a portion of an Optimetrics setup analysis.

• Non-Distributed Analysis controls the initial portion of analysis that runs before the start of any distributed analysis. This initial portion cannot be distributed to separate hosts, and must be run on a single host.

— Number of cores controls the degree of parallelism used for this part of the analysis. There is only one setting for the non-distributed analysis, as this part of the analysis must occur on a single host.

• Log Analysis Progress will log analysis progress to a <projname.progress> file. The file contains informative warning and error messages and progress text. Progress text is added every two seconds.

• Next accepts the current settings, and opens the Submit HPC Job: Properties dialog.

• Cancel dismisses the dialog without submitting the job.

After clicking Next on the Submit HPC Job : Tasks dialog, the Submit HPC Job : Properties dialog opens.

The following controls are available. Click Less Options or More Options to modify the number of options that are displayed.

• Job Name (required)

• Job Template (required, but may be set to Default)

• Specify job description file (optional)

• Specify Priority (optional)

• Compute Resource Granularity: Core, Socket, or Node (required)

• Specify Min Units - set to same as Max Units

• Specify Max Units - set to same as Min Units

• Specify Node Exclusivity: true or false (optional)

• Specify Min Memory (optional)

• Specify Max Memory (optional)

• Specify Min Cores (optional)

• Specify Max Cores (optional)

• Finish submits the job.

• Back returns to the Submit HPC Job: Tasks dialog.

• Cancel dismisses the dialog without submitting the job.

The Job description file is created by the Windows HPC Job Manager. If a job description file is specified, the settings in this file will be used to obtain the following job properties:

• Job licenses

• Job run options

• Project (different from the Ansoft project)

• Node list that limits the nodes on which the job can run

• Node groups that filter the nodes available to run the job

• Node prioritization that allows you to determine node preferences

For a description of these properties, see the Windows HPC Job Manager documentation.

Note

To submit a job to a cluster, Client Utilities from the Microsoft HPC Pack must be installed on the submit host. If the Client Utilities are not installed, the Ansoft Submit HPC Job dialog will be unable to contact the cluster head node.
