Portable Batch System Pro From Altair Engineering

The follow sections describe the general guidelines for submitting serial and parallel Ansoft batch jobs using the Portable Batch System Professional from Altair Engineering (PBS). For options that can facilitate monitoring of Ansoft batch jobs, see Monitoring Ansoft PBS Batch Jobs.

Submitting Ansoft PBS Batch Jobs

The PBS qsub command may be used to submit Ansoft batch jobs. The typical command format is:

qsub qsub_args script

where:

• qsub_args specifies the options of the qsub command

• script is the pathname of the job script

The job is a shell script containing the Ansoft batch command(s) to be run. If a batch command line contains any characters that are special to the shell running the script, these special characters should be quoted as needed. The job script may also contain PBS directives on lines that precede the first executable line of the script. Any qsub options on the command line will take precedence over the PBS directives in the job script.

Serial PBS Batch Jobs

Serial PBS batch jobs are called single-node jobs. And in general, any job submitted without the “-l nodes=value” argument is run as a serial single-node job.

Parallel PBS Batch Jobs

Parallel PBS batch jobs are called multi-node jobs. When an Ansoft batch job is run as a PBS parallel job, the PBS scheduler selects hosts for the distributed analysis job based on the following:

• qsub command-line arguments

• PBS resource directives from the job script

• The status of the hosts when the job is run. The desktop process obtains the list of hosts allocated to the job from the PBS scheduler and starts analysis processes on these hosts as needed using the PBS scheduler facilities.

• To run a parallel PBS job, the job must be submitted with a “-l nodes=value” qsub option or with a “-l nodes=value” directive in the job script.
